What is the UKMLA Content Map and how does it relate to PLAB 1?

From August 2024 onwards, every PLAB 1 paper is built directly on the GMC Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) Content Map — the same blueprint used for the UK Medical Licensing Assessment that UK graduates will sit. How long is the PLAB 1 exam and what is the format?

PLAB 1 is a 3-hour computer-based exam consisting of 180 single best answer (SBA) multiple-choice questions. Each question gives a clinical vignette, a focused lead-in (e.g. "What is the SINGLE most appropriate next step?") and five options labelled A to E. There is one correct answer and four distractors per question.

What is the pass mark for PLAB 1?

The GMC sets the pass mark using the modified Angoff method plus one standard error of measurement. Historically, the pass mark falls between 110 and 126 out of 180 (roughly 60-70%), and varies between sittings depending on paper difficulty.
